| This unit builds on basic chemical concepts acquired in earlier years. Theories of molecular bonding are expanded using simple quantum mechanics and used to explain chemical properties such as colour, shape, symmetry, spectroscopy, magnetism, stability, reactivity and biological activity with examples of important organometallic compounds used in industry and medicine. New areas of the Periodic Table are explored, including the heavier Transition Metals, Lanthanides and Actinides that underpin many emerging technologies for energy storage and communications. |
