Unit Description

This unit will introduce students to the concepts of communications skills in the context of biomedical science and health care. They will learn and apply the principles of effective communication and clinical reasoning. The topic will also include an overview of the scientific method and evidence based medicine and will emphasise the importance of identifying and using quality sources of information.

Unit Learning Outcomes

1.	Demonstrate and apply the key principles of effective interpersonal and interprofessional communication including developing trust, respect and rapport.
2.	Demonstrate a range of communication skills required by health professionals.
3.	Demonstrate the skills required to effectively communicate with patients in a diverse range of settings and in a range of contexts.
4.	Demonstrate the ability to identify quality sources of information and apply information literacy skills in a group environment.
5.	Demonstrate effective communication skills in order to progress to medicine.
