Unit Description

In this unit students will learn about acquired neurogenic language and cognitive-communication disorders associated with stroke, traumatic brain injury, and degenerative or progressive neurological conditions such as dementia. Students will establish competency in the assessment, analysis and interpretation of client data, as well as the planning and implementation of evidence-based, client-centred speech pathology practice for clients with acquired language disorders and associated conditions. Students will critically reflect on the impact of acquired language disorders on a client's activity, participation and quality of life.

Important Information

This unit requires attendance at 5 days of residential school during which students will participate in a simulated Novice Level adult speech pathology placement

Unit Learning Outcomes

1.	Apply current theoretical perspectives and models of acquired neurogenic language impairments.
2.	Justify appropriate use of informal and formal assessment options for clients with acquired neurogenic communication disorders and associated conditions of brain injury..
3.	Analyse and integrate assessment and case information to formulate evidence-based and person-centred management plans for clients with acquired neurogenic communication disorders.
4.	Design and implement education programs about acquired language disorders for clients, carers, multidisciplinary team members, and the wider community.
5.	Evaluate the impact of acquired language disorders and associated conditions of brain injury on clients and their families' quality of life and the impacts on activity and participation.
