This unit builds upon SWK103 Social Work Skills A and prepares students for SWK230 Field Education A. Students will be introduced to strengths-based, solution focused and narrative approaches to practice. Students will participate in simulated practice by engaging in role plays and small group workshops and strengthen practical application within diverse fields of practice, including working with First Nations peoples. Students will develop their critical reflection skills on the use of self in practice, skills for engagement, assessment, planning, crisis intervention and closure.
The unit is provided predominantly online, however, ALL students must attend a compulsory 5 day internal intensive to meet accreditation requirements of the Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW). The intensive includes video recording of social work skills and students are required to bring a mobile recording device. The intensive will be conducted at CDU Casuarina Campus. Students are to cover cost for travel and accommodation.
