Unit Description

The unit will engage preservice teachers in the critical analysis and understanding of First Nations peoples, cultures, and perspectives, emphasizing the importance of responsive teaching. Preservice teachers will build on their existing knowledges from prior units to develop a critical understanding of contemporary Indigenous education policies and the application of demonstrated best practice to facilitate First Nations student success, focusing on cultural safety, community engagement, and diversity within and across First Nations groups. The unit enables students to work confidently in various contexts to teach First Nations learners, and to teach about Australia's First Nations people and cultures.

Unit Learning Outcomes

1.	Critically apply social justice principles, pedagogical knowledge and critical thinking in the discussion of contemporary Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander education issues.
2.	Critically evaluate national and local curricula, focusing their approach to Indigenous studies to incorporate First Nations perspectives, histories, and cultures, and identifying opportunities for more inclusive content
3.	Critically analyse the evidence base and contemporary approaches to evaluating culturally responsive and inclusive practices including reflexive personal learning.
4.	Apply initiative, creativity and critical judgment to the planning and implementation of teaching practices in a range of Indigenous educational context.
5.	Apply culturally responsive teaching practices that cater to the needs of diverse student populations, including EAL/D and First Nations students, incorporating local First Nations content developed in collaboration with local communities.
