Unit Description

This unit looks at the principles that the Australian courts apply to civil cases in which there may be links to foreign countries. This unit is highly relevant for students who plan to go into legal practice. This unit covers topics including: the jurisdiction of Australian courts, when and why Australian courts exercise jurisdiction, the Australian complementary cross-vesting legislation, an introduction to theory and method in choice of law, choice of law in particular areas of law, such as contract and tort.

Unit Learning Outcomes

1.	Identify, discuss and analyse important themes and foundational concepts in private international law.
2.	Analyse and evaluate the implementation of private international law principles in Australian courts
3.	Critically evaluate private international law concepts
4.	Identify, discuss and critically analyse the major features, principles, legislation and cases in private international law.
5.	Apply problem solving skills, by using private international law principles in providing advice on hypothetical and actual problems
6.	Communicate in ways that are persuasive and effective for legal and non-legal audiences, in written and oral form, in private international law context
