This combined degree course provides students with the opportunity to major in a commerce program in conjunction with legal studies with a view to satisfying the academic requirements for admission into the legal profession.
Internal students will attend classes at the CDU Waterfront Darwin for Commerce units and Casuarina Campus for Law units. The courses can also be studied in the external mode. External students have access to live online tutorials as well as online access to the audiotapes of all lectures, enabling them to complete the course from anywhere in the world.
The Commerce course caters for individuals working in, or intending to work in, commerce or government in a number of business related fields. The program provides students with the career and professional skills needed in a rapidly changing business environment. It allows for flexibility of study and prepares students for careers in a variety of business fields. In addition, communication, presentation and problem-solving skills are emphasised.
The primary aim of the law course is to provide a legal education for the practice of law. In that context, the course aims to provide knowledge of the legal system and legal principles, and to cultivate a capacity for legal research, analysis and communication. The course also provides international and theoretical perspectives on the law and encourages an appreciation of legal issues of special significance to the Northern Territory, including Aboriginal legal issues.
Graduates of law are not restricted to a career as a solicitor or barrister, if that is not their ambition. A law degree opens up career options in diverse areas, including in-house counsel of private and public institutions, in teaching, industrial relations, the military, police services, politics, human rights, customs, immigration an in any public or private sector employment where an in-depth understanding of the law is an advantage.
Graduates of this combined degree are awarded both the Bachelor of Commerce and the Bachelor of Laws.
