Unit Description

Languages Other Than English (LOTE) across the junior curriculum Year 7 to Year 10 engages preservice teachers to review contemporary issues and relevant literature, to apply pedagogical approaches, strategies and practices to expose students to learning a foreign language and appreciate various cultures. The LOTE unit introduces preservice teachers to second language acquisition theory and practices for effective LOTE delivery across various context and to diverse learners. This unit further develops knowledge of receptive and productive modes, LOTE language production, and learning environments that support students to become globally aware citizens confident in multilingual and multicultural contexts. This unit enables participants to understand LOTE policies, curriculum, ICT integration and applied pedagogies in conjunction with developing LOTE learning sequences and delivering effective content.

1.	Critically reflect on previous and current Languages Other Than English (LOTE) policies and teaching issues,
2.	Critically review the Languages Other Than English (LOTE) discipline literature to demonstrate understanding of recent developments of professional responsibilities across the teaching network.
3.	Critically evaluate the Languages Other Than English (LOTE) curriculum and specific target language literacy and numeracy skills.
4.	Plan effective achievable Languages Other Than English (LOTE) pedagogy, learning goals and learning sequences in line with general capabilities and cross curriculum priorities.
5.	Apply best second language acquisition practices to align with content knowledge, awareness of curriculum and productive receptive forms.
6.	Plan and develop a range of teaching strategies that integrates digital technologies, literacy and numeracy strategies, to promote effective learning.
7.	Design differentiated assessments to meet diverse learning needs using student data to make consistent judgements about learning and teaching.
