| This postgraduate unit will lead pre-service teachers to develop a deep and connected mathematical knowledge, and build the capacity to think and work like a mathematician and a mathematics educator. It is built around the structure and philosophy of the Australian Curriculum in Mathematics, which has three content strands (number and algebra, measurement and geometry, and statistics and probability) and four key ideas or proficiency strands (fluency, understanding, problem solving, and reasoning). During the unit, the pre-service teachers will be encouraged to develop higher-order mathematical reasoning, such as the ability to critically examine, apply knowledge to a range of contexts, reflect, and justify answers. They will develop creativity and initiative, through use of varied methods in mathematical problem solving and investigations. The pre-service teachers will be expected to read widely and base their arguments on literature and curriculum. |
