Unit Description

Health and wellbeing in young children is intimately connected to the environment where they are living and learning. The focus in this unit is the environments that promote health and wellbeing in children in the early years. This unit introduces preservice teachers to the foundational concepts of the health, policy and learning environments and their interconnectedness and importance when considering a young child's health and wellbeing. Policy documents relating to health and wellbeing as they relate to early childhood will be examined to provide a context in which to explain the different environments that support a child's sense of place and belonging. Preservice students will have opportunities to reflect, discuss and propose plans for practice that stimulate positive learning environments for children according to the Early Years Learning Framework before investigating the challenges faced when planning positive and inclusive learning environments to meet a wide range of student needs.

Unit Learning Outcomes

1.	Evaluate the effectiveness of different pedagogical approaches in a range of environments that collectively contribute to a child's sense of wellbeing.
2.	Analyse how the background, rationale and prominence of policy documents is relevant to early years education, care and school settings.
3.	Explain how policies determine health, education and childcare provision to frame safe environments and inform educators' planning and practice in ways that are relevant to a child's learning, family and communities.
4.	Reflect on the impact of early diagnosis and early intervention for children with disabilities and their family, including implications for their educational outcomes.
5.	Examine how the definitions of health and wellbeing provide foundational links to positive learning environments to determine learning outcomes that correlate with the Early Years Learning Framework and the Australian Curriculum.
