The purpose of this unit is to provide an introduction to the elementary and common torts, including intentional torts and negligent torts. The unit will examine the historical foundation and development of torts and the elements that are needed in order to successfully establish a claim for a particular tort and defence to a claim for that tort. The unit will examine negligence, nuisance, trespass and defamation.
This unit covers the Priestly 11 requirements. Topics examined by this unit include:
- Negligence (including defences)
- Representative range of torts (other than negligence) and their defences
- Damages
- Concurrent liability
- Compensation schemes
This unit will include a comparative transnational and/or international element, where appropriate.
