Unit Description

MLS312 is a placement unit for the Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science and should only be attempted upon successful completion of the theory units within this course. This unit is designed to complement the previous study students have undertaken. In this unit students will undertake a professional placement where they will participate in a broad range of test procedures that are performed to assist in the investigation, diagnosis, monitoring and treatment of disease. They will gain supervised professional experience in a medical research or pathology laboratory that is affiliated with the university. Students will also gain an understanding of the occupational health and safety issues and risk assessments required for a safe work environment. Additionally, students will explore the role and structure of the pathology laboratory and its relationship with other divisions within the pathology laboratory and the healthcare sector.

Unit Learning Outcomes

1.	Competently perform a range of testing in the contemporary medical laboratory encompassing pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical components of laboratory services, including hematology, chemistry, microbiology, urinalysis, body fluids, molecular diagnostics, phlebotomy, and immunohematology
2.	Prepare reagents, standards and equipment in order to be able to perform test procedures
3.	Explain and use the appropriate systems for reporting and issuing results
4.	Suggest further testing, as required, for a definitive diagnosis
5.	Illustrate a familiarity with the organisational structure of the laboratory and an understanding of the importance of professionalism and ethics within the laboratory
