Unit Description

In this unit, students will explore the pathophysiology of the cardiovascular, renal systems and gastrointestinal systems. The pharmacology of medicines will be covered and applied to these systems as a basis for dispensing and counselling on these medicines. Students will develop medicine management plans, provide patient-centered care within the ethical, legal, and professional framework. They will expand their triage and communication skills, to provide over-the-counter medicine, education, and/or lifestyle advice as required.

This unit will allow students to translate theory into practice with a one-day a week (7.5 hours) work-integrated learning professional placement in an approved pharmacy setting, which will also provide an interprofessional practice component.

Unit Learning Outcomes

1.	Reliably predict drug efficacy and patient outcomes using the principles of clinical pharmacology, biochemistry, and pathophysiology in regard to the cardiovascular, renal, and gastrointestinal systems.
2.	Develop a patient-centred medication management plan
3.	Apply and communicate appropriate clinical skills in a multidisciplinary clinical setting with confidence and influence
4.	Accurately dispense medicines in accordance with relevant legal, professional, and ethical requirements.
5.	Assist in the management of minor illnesses using over-the-counter medicines, complementary therapies and referrals appropriately
6.	Align theory and workplace skills through observation and participation while undertaking clinical placement
7.	Reflect critically on workplace practices and performance feedback for professional development.
