This unit will develop the knowledge and skills required to plan and implement a substantial research-based project in the public health or health research areas, under the supervision of an experienced researcher. As the generation of knowledge and the applicability of findings to the fields of public health and health research are essential aspects of research, the topic should be current, relevant and attempt to fill identified gaps in the literature and/or practice. Students will: select an appropriate research topic; critique current evidence through the analysis and articulation of the relevant literature; consider and utilise ethical research principles and processes; prepare a research proposal; select and apply appropriate research principles and methods; and produce a thesis or alternative piece of writing which embodies the results of the research. The scope of the project needs to be appropriate to complete and write up the research within the designated time frame. Students must contact the Unit Coordinator and/or Unit Administrator prior to enrolment to check eligibility, discuss suitable research topics and find a suitable supervisor. This is a 40 credit point unit for students who will complete the research project full-time over one semester.
