Unit Description

The unit will develop knowledge and skills in caring for paediatric patients. Further to developing skills in relation to a normal delivery and a newborn, students will also develop competencies in dealing with the unique anatomical and physiological aspects of this group of patients in a prehospital setting. This unit also introduces students to skills in the unique emotional aspects that are inherent when dealing with small children and their carers.

Students will be required to attend a compulsory on campus intensive.

Unit Learning Outcomes

1.	Develop the skills to communicate effectively in a culturally aware manner when dealing with paediatric patients and their carers.
2.	Critically analyse the differences between adult and paediatric physiology.
3.	Critically analyse unique physiological aspects of children especially in terms of haemodynamic considerations and drug dosages.
4.	Design and implement a management plan for common paediatric emergencies.
5.	Present the entire process of care for paediatric patients, inclusive of assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation with a focus on promoting optimal care in the pre hospital environment.
