Unit Description

This unit assists international students in their preparation to progress through to English B. This unit aims to:

Promote knowledge and understanding of English language skills and techniques for future study at university
Develop content knowledge, subject didactic knowledge and knowledge about academic learning and practice in preparation to fit the pedagogical requirements of tertiary study at university
Expand student involvement in critical discourse
Develop oral language and leadership skills through active participation in group assignments and presentations for future study at university.

Unit Learning Outcomes

1.	Demonstrate understanding of the main ideas and supporting details in a range of spoken and written texts.
2.	Critically analyse a range of written texts.
3.	Participate effectively in sustained spoken academic discourse, including oral presentation.
4.	Create academic written texts that present logical and coherent argument and demonstrate paraphrasing, summarising and referencing skills.
5.	Use grammar and syntax to communicate effectively.
6.	Demonstrate a range of vocabulary appropriate to academic context.

3.	Mid Semester Test (120 minutes)	20%	1 - Demonstrate understanding of the main ideas and supporting details in a range of spoken and written texts. 2 - Critically analyse a range of written texts. 4 - Create academic written texts that present logical and coherent argument and demonstrate paraphrasing, summarising and referencing skills. 5 - Use grammar and syntax to communicate effectively. 6 - Demonstrate a range of vocabulary appropriate to academic context.
4.	End of Semester Test (180 minutes)	30%	1 - Demonstrate understanding of the main ideas and supporting details in a range of spoken and written texts. 2 - Critically analyse a range of written texts. 4 - Create academic written texts that present logical and coherent argument and demonstrate paraphrasing, summarising and referencing skills. 5 - Use grammar and syntax to communicate effectively. 6 - Demonstrate a range of vocabulary appropriate to academic context.
