Unit Description

This applied research unit offers students the opportunity to conduct the ongoing work required to undertake a research project culminating in a completed dissertation on an aspect of emergency and disaster management. The research process in this unit will enable the refining and reworking of a research proposal as required; ongoing review and critique of relevant literature; refining and reviewing an appropriate methodological approach to guide the investigation of the topic; collecting data; analysing and interpreting the findings; and recommending strategies for further professional development in emergency and disaster studies.
Students must have completed or be enrolled in DEM820 concurrently with enrolment in DEM821.

Unit Learning Outcomes

1.	Review and undertake an applied research project on a negotiated topic of inquiry.
2.	Consolidate literature and critique for the selected research topic. .
3.	Review and revise research methodology, method and design in the light of a changing research context.
4.	Contribute to the developing body of knowledge in emergency and disaster management.
5.	Disseminate the findings and recommendations to relevant professional and academic forums.
6.	Evaluate research findings with peers.
