Assumed Knowledge

In order to gain admission to English for Academic Purposes 3 potential students must meet the academic requirements of their primary degree program and meet one of the following English requirements:

IELTS Academic Module A minimum overall score of 5.5 with no band less than 5

Cambridge Advanced English (CAE) A minimum overall score of 162, with no skill below 154.

Common European Framework Certificate of English Proficiency A minimum overall grade of B1.

Pearson Test of English (PTE) Academic module A minimum overall score of 42 with no score lower than 36.

TOEFL Internet-based Test (iBT) A minimum overall score of 46 with a minimum score of 14 for reading, speaking and listening and a minimum score of 21 for writing.

Students must be at least 17 years old when they commence the program.

Unit Description

The purpose of this course is to develop overseas students' academic reading, writing, listening and speaking skills to a mid B2 level on the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) for languages or IELTS Band 6. The Academic Skills component aims to help students develop independent learning skills essential for success at an Australian tertiary education institution.

Unit Learning Outcomes

1.	READING:Identify key ideas, supporting detail and main arguments in academic texts. Adapt reading strategies and speed to different text types, structures and purposes. Recognise a writer's opinion and attitude towards information they are citing. Identify the relevance and usefulness of texts and their sections for assignments. Identify contextual clues to infer the meaning of unfamiliar vocabulary.
2.	LISTENING:Identify key ideas and supporting detail in well-structured spoken academic texts on both concrete and abstract topics in a variety of accents. Recognize the speaker's point of view and distinguish this from facts they are reporting. Follow group discussions on a range of familiar topics. Follow academic lectures delivered in a variety of accents.
3.	SPEAKING:Produce clear, detailed speech on a range of subjects. Express and respond to a stance in group discussions with a degree of fluency and spontaneity. Deliver a planned academic presentation with a focus on key arguments and relevant supporting detail. Demonstrate (a good) command of vocabulary and grammatical structures appropriate for spoken academic discourse. Use a variety of appropriate pronunciation features to communicate effectively.
4.	WRITING:Write a range of clear, detailed, coherent and cohesive academic texts on concrete and abstract topics. Adapt writing strategies to suit different purposes and audiences. Follow academic writing conventions, including structure, register, signposting and use of citations. Use a range of grammatical structures and academic vocabulary appropriate for the academic context. Develop own academic voice. Synthesize information from academic sources to support an argument.
5.	ACADEMIC SKILLS:Identify and apply group communication and collaboration strategies appropriate in an Australian university environment. Note-take and summaries key points in a lecture. Apply principles of academic integrity such as paraphrasing, quoting and appropriately acknowledging other authors' ideas. Apply research skills to select academic sources relevant to an assignment. Demonstrate an ability to study in a multicultural setting. Analyse and apply independent learning strategies. Develop critical thinking skills to undertake assessment tasks at the tertiary level. Develop digital literacy skills to meet the demands of an Australian tertiary environment.
