Unit Description

This unit introduces the basic concepts of fluid mechanics and thermodynamics necessary for mechanical, civil and chemical engineers.

Topics in the fluid mechanics area include:

pressure and head
motion of fluid particles and streams
the momentum equation and its applications
the energy equation and its applications
dimensional analysis and similarity
laminar and turbulent flows in bound systems

Topics in the thermodynamics area include:

first law of thermodynamics
second law of thermodynamics
isentropic process and efficiency
energy and mass conservation

This unit is reliant on on-line materials. Students must have access to a reliable high-speed broadband connection and a scanner.

Unit Learning Outcomes

1.	Complete calculations based on fundamental engineering concepts relating to fluid properties.
2.	Derive and solve hydrostatics problems encountered in manometers, plane and curved surfaces and buoyant bodies.
3.	Solve problems associated with the three fundamental fluid flow equations namely equations of mass, momentum and energy.
4.	Determine the thermodynamic properties of pure substances using property tables.
5.	Determine the energy transfer in a system by heat and work.
6.	Apply the conservation of energy and mass principles to both open and closed systems.
7.	Explain the laws of thermodynamics and entropy generation as applied to a variety of engineering systems.
