| This unit introduces students to the field of Geographical Information Systems (GIS). During this unit you will be trained how to think about the world in a new way, whilst developing the practical skills for analysing, visualising and synthesising spatial data. Subject matter includes: cartography, geoprocessing, surface analysis, data management, and data models. All of these skills are taught through a series of lectures and tutorials based around solving real-world problems. GIS skills are used routinely in a wide range of diverse field and careers including: ecology, wildlife and fire management, meteorology, disaster and emergency action planning geology, environmental science, resource modelling, urban planning, even business and tourism. Adding GIS skills to your undergraduate or graduate program is sure to open up new avenues and opportunities.
Students will need a computer with Windows operating system to use GIS software. Students with a Mac computer will be able to use virtual system for accessing software.
