This unit enables learners to explore current pharmacological treatment practices in mental health, as well as the role of complimentary therapies as an adjunct to conventional treatment in the management of contemporary mental health issues. A lifespan approach will be undertaken so learners can consider the implications of pharmacological treatments across the broad spectrum of disorders over time. Advanced knowledge about the context and consequences of treatments for individuals, families and the broader community is provided. Students will explore current ethico-legal issues related to pharmacological treatment in mental health clinical practice. Safety and management of medications in acute care and community care will be considered.
