This unit is designed to introduce students from any health discipline to key concepts in mental health and alcohol and other drug issues encountered in Australian society. Commencing with a historical overview of mental illness, students will develop knowledge of the main mental health problems experienced by individuals. Students will be introduced to the views and attitudes associated with substance use patterns. There is exploration of the role of health professionals and the models of care employed in contemporary mental health and alcohol and other drug services. Students will analyse the nexus between health care and the law, examining national mental health strategies and mental health legislation. The social and cultural context of mental illness and wellbeing is explored in association with strategies that facilitate mental wellbeing from a professional and personal perspective.
