Unit Description

This unit provides a thematic examination of western political thought from classical Greek and Roman political ideas to contemporary political theories and ideologies. Students examine key concepts such as authority, sovereignty and political obligation, justice, freedom, and rights by examining the political ideas of key thinkers in the western tradition and issues in contemporary political theory.

Unit Learning Outcomes

1.	Critically analyse political thinking in relation to the historical development of political ideas.
2.	Apply selected theoretical approaches to the study of political ideas.
3.	Evaluate contemporary approaches to political theory and ideas.
4.	Analyse and interpret the origins and development of central political ideas in the western tradition.
5.	Employ analytical skills through comparative study of political theories and ideas.
