This unit builds on the theory and care learned in MID201 and MID203 and enables students to deepen their knowledge and understanding of labour, birth, and the puerperium including transition of the newborn to extrauterine life, with a focus on complex childbearing within a women-centred approach and encompassing childbirth education. Students demonstrate knowledge and skills for the theoretical concepts and practical application of principles for midwifery practice in midwifery emergencies including cord prolapse, neonatal resuscitation, postpartum haemorrhage, breech birth and shoulder dystocia. Students further explore the care and management of women with medical complications in pregnancy including the use of blood transfusion. Practical application of professional midwifery practice includes working in midwifery models of care using primary healthcare principles, collaborative relationships, midwifery clinical decision making, and preparation for employment as a midwife. Content includes perineal repair, venipuncture and cannulation, assisting women and infants with overcome feeding difficulties, and pharmacology including the use of antibiotics, analgesia and anaesthesia and immunisations.
Students must also complete a Clinical Teaching Block prior to a 240 hour clinical placement associated with a Clinical Assessment Portfolio that provides a formative and summative assessment.
Online enrolment is not available and students must submit an application for special enrolment through eForms. Prior to submitting a special enrolment, it is important students confirm they have met the required prerequisites of the unit.
