Unit Description

This unit provides students with a comprehensive understanding of the various interdisciplinary fields that contribute to gaining an in-depth understanding of the interconnected nature of emergency and disaster management regimes. Students analyse past events and consider future scenarios to develop strategies for effective interrelationships and crosssector cooperation in the challenging contexts of emergencies and/or disasters. Case studies are used to explore the broad spectrum of interdisciplinary aspects associated with management of disasters and to build community and organisational resilience.

Unit Learning Outcomes

1.	Analyse and explain the conceptual and pragmatic aspects governing different interdisciplinary areas of operation in emergency and disaster management.
2.	Critically evaluate interdisciplinary coordination mechanisms in emergency and disaster management contexts in disaster prone regions in the world.
3.	Evaluate and apply regional and international cooperation frameworks to reduce vulnerabilities and build resilience to disaster risk.
4.	Evaluate and explain local, national and international disaster risk reduction and relevant resilience building strategies, policies and practices.
5.	Critically analyse and explain the specific needs of vulnerable groups in humanitarian, emergency and disaster contexts.
6.	Critically examine strategies, policies and practices to increase the resilience of communities to reduce disaster risk and contribute towards sustainable development.
