Unit Description

In this unit, preservice teachers will continue to develop their understanding of teaching secondary visual arts, with a focus on the senior secondary curriculum (Years 11-12). Using relevant syllabus documents students will learn to develop engaging lessons plans and sequences of learning applying various teaching strategies, including the role of explicit teaching, modelling, scaffolding and extension. Pedagogical approaches relevant to the age group and associated learning development stage, and different forms of assessment and feedback strategies, relevant to the senior years of school will be explored.

Unit Learning Outcomes

1.	Critically review research that identifies pedagogy and teaching practices, including the role of explicit teaching, modelling and scaffolding for visual arts education, and the role of visual arts practice personal, social, and cultural contexts.
2.	Critically analyse personal and contextual factors, including explicit modelling of new skills and content, that shape the understanding of visual arts and the engagement in arts activities.
3.	Apply unit and lesson planning principles to design learning experiences that are authentic and cognitively engaging, including literacy and numeracy teaching strategies.
4.	Critically reflect on effective pedagogical and studio practices to design a range of productive learning environments in Visual Arts.
5.	Critically apply pedagogical content knowledge to evaluate, select and adapt teaching strategies and resources that are relevant for teaching senior secondary Visual Arts.
6.	Apply culturally sensitive approaches to teaching Visual Arts that align with the Australian Curriculum.
