Unit Description

This unit builds upon Languages Other Than English (LOTE) 1 by further preparing preservice teachers to effectively respond to the requirements set by the South Australian Certificate of Education (SACE) and other national senior curricular. Preservice teachers will gain a fuller understanding of LOTE curriculum progression, pedagogical practices, programming and assessment for Year 11 and Year 12. Preservice teachers will build on their knowledge of second language acquisition, how the brain learns, literacy, programming, sequencing, and assessing in line with SACE and various states and territories Year 12 exit requirements. In preparation for teaching LOTE, participants will demonstrate a fuller understanding of their target language architecture and structures to build, practice and retain knowledge and accounts for differentiated learning needs differentiated learning and digital technologies experiences.

Unit Learning Outcomes

1.	Critically discuss previous and current Languages Other Than English (LOTE) policies and issues to develop an understanding of Languages Other Than English (LOTE) curriculum from Years 11 and Year 12.
2.	Critically reflect on state and territory target language objectives for Year 12 exit to appraise and design innovative programs.
3.	Demonstrate effective achievable pedagogy, learning goals, learning sequences and planning which align with language acquisition and how the brain learns.
4.	Demonstrate content knowledge that aligns with best Second Language Acquisition practices and assessing for secondary school context.
5.	Develop a range of classroom teaching strategies that move students from familiarisation to mastery and integrates digital technologies, literacy and numeracy concepts and diagnostic assessment, formative assessment and feedback strategies to promote effective learning for diverse learners.
6.	Design effective summative assessment and rubrics in line with state and territory requirements suitable for Year 12 exit expectations.
