Unit Description

The aim of this unit is to develop preservice teachers' mathematical content, such as a basic understanding of patterns, numbers, space and geometry, chance, time and measurement, and pedagogical knowledge required for teaching mathematics to primary school students (Year 3-6). Considering the developmental stages of children, a range of pedagogical strategies used to engage children's mathematical learning are taught and practiced. Preservice teachers will learn to translate and implement the research-based responsive and differentiated approaches and theories to address the diversity of learners and structure effective resources to provide positive learning environments to children. Preservice teachers will also examine the content strands and proficiency strands in the Australian Curriculum: Mathematics. Assessment of mathematical and pedagogical knowledge, integrating ICT and providing feedback and reporting on learning, will also be a focus in this unit.

Unit Learning Outcomes

1.	Apply mathematical content knowledge and pedagogical skills to foster the effective teaching and learning of mathematics.
2.	Critically review mathematical teaching theories, approaches and evidence-based practices to inform the teaching practices in classrooms to promote mathematical learning and develop positive learning behaviour.
3.	Design differentiated mathematics teaching experiences to address the diversity of learners and to create a safe learning environment.
4.	Demonstrate an understanding of critical progression points for childrens mathematical learning, including the impact of multiple literacies capabilities.
5.	Apply a variety of teaching and technological resources and integrate information communication technology (ICT) in teaching practice.
6.	Evaluate student learning using diagnostic assessments and provide constructive feedback to students and parents/carers.
