Unit Description

This unit introduces students to a knowledge of Australian Indigenous languages and assist in shaping their developing pedagogical practices through the understanding of the role that language plays in learning. The unit offers students an opportunity to develop knowledge and skills in meeting the needs of learners in an Indigenous language setting and to develop an understanding of Indigenous languages and their role in the classroom.

Unit Learning Outcomes

1.	Analyse the diverse range of languages used by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders and the language shift and change in Australian Indigenous languages.
2.	Analyse and compare linguistic features and structures of Australian Indigenous languages and sound systems, grammars, orthographies.
3.	Discuss intercultural aspects of approaches to teaching and learning including the role of the family, parents, carers, and wider community in shaping a child¿ engagement with schooling, and a child¿s early language and literacy development.
4.	Demonstrate broad knowledge of inclusive teaching practices that respond to the diverse cultural and linguistic learning needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students and to principles of multilingualism and reconciliation.
5.	Apply and critique pedagogical practice in language teaching situations.
