Unit Description

Students will develop a deeper knowledge of emotional intelligence (EI) and how it applies to clinical and broader professional practice. It is expected that learners will initially reflect upon their current understanding of this construct and then through reading the scholarly literature, critically review emotional intelligence. In doing so, learners will develop an understanding of how EI can potentially shape the nursing profession at both a local and global level. Students will also explore ways in which they can enhance their own practice by utilising their acquired knowledge of EI.

1.	Critically reflect upon the broad impact of emotional intelligence in personal, community and professional settings.
2.	Analyse and appraise the literature around theories of emotional intelligence.
3.	Apply theories of emotional intelligence to a range of professional fields and healthcare settings.
4.	Examine the impact of the emotional intelligence on the health and well-being of clients, communities and co-workers.
5.	Critically reflect on the elements of a culturally appropriate environment for users of health and human services.
6.	Critically analyse situations and scenarios and reflect upon these as a means of improving emotional care provided in nursing practice.
7.	Identify and apply strategies that can be implemented to ensure emotional intelligence is an intuitive aspect of professional practice.
