Unit Description

This unit provides students with specialist knowledge and skills to successfully provide safe, evidence-based and effective care in both the retrieval and secondary transfer setting. Students will focus on the impact the aeromedical environment has on patients, procedures and equipment. Additionally, students will contextualise the principles of aeromedical care for adult and obstetric conditions likely to be encountered. This unit will analyse how the availability of material, personnel and flight impacts the retrieval.

The unit includes attendance on campus for a one (1) week intensive. The intensive week is compulsory, and students are expected to meet all costs for travel and accommodation in relation to the intensive week.

Unit Learning Outcomes

1.	Explore unique and common adult trauma, medical and obstetric conditions and key clinical procedures required in the prehospital/primary aeromedical environment.
2.	Analyse the role of the aeromedical retrieval service with reference to key organisations for prehospital mass casualty incidents and disasters.
3.	Evaluate the principles of safety, leadership and crew resource management for efficient and effective aeromedical retrievals.
4.	Evaluate the differences between standard hospital-based health care and all phases of prehospital and secondary aeromedical retrievals.
5.	Critically analyse the role of team members in secondary retrievals in the aeromedical environment including communication and documentation.
