In this unit, students will engage with issues relating to various forms of language contact. It will provide them with skills to identify and critically assess the positive and negative effects of language contact on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander languages. Students will analyse linguistic processes in language contact situations and the use of different varieties of Aboriginal English, creole languages and new mixed languages. By learning about the process of language change due to cross-cultural contact, students will develop critical understanding of the diverse factors and varying circumstances involved in language contact situations.
