Unit Description

This unit examines the institutions of social control in Western industrial societies and explores the processes by which deviant behaviour is identified and regulated. The distribution of deviant behaviour is explained in terms both of the immediate context in which it is labelled and produced and of the wider processes of an increasingly disciplined and bureaucratised society.

Unit Learning Outcomes

1.	Critically evaluate theoretical perspectives and approaches to the study of deviance and crime.
2.	Compare and contrast the theories of deviance.
3.	Critically analyse the extent of and types of crime in Australia, relating these theories to real life events and issues.
