Unit Description

Criminology considers crime as a social construct. It looks beyond what constitutes criminal conduct and includes consideration of the nature and impact of crime, who commits criminal offences and why, and the reactions of society to such conduct. It is premised on a desire to understand, predict and control criminal behaviour. The unit will consider crime and topical issues in Australia, the Northern Territory and other jurisdictions.

Unit Learning Outcomes

1.	Identify, discuss and analyse major themes and foundational concepts in criminology.
2.	Analyse and evaluate contemporary issues in criminology
3.	Critically evaluate criminology concepts and legal mechanisms by studying a range of theoretical approaches and bodies of applied research. This includes understanding the principles and the broader international, transnational and comparative context.
4.	Identify, discuss and critically analyse the major features, and principles of criminology in Australia generally and in particular the Northern Territory.
5.	Demonstrate legal problem solving skills, to apply criminology principles in providing advice on relevant (especially contemporary) issues in crime
6.	Demonstrate persuasive written and oral communication skills in a criminology context.
