In this unit, students examine the relationship between food, nutrition and health and wellbeing. The roles and functions of key macronutrients, micronutrients and functional components of food will be explored alongside gaining an understanding of gastrointestinal anatomy and physiology and nutrient metabolism. Students will gain an understanding of how dietary intake influences energy balance and body composition within the context of overall nutritional and health status. Students will explore evidence-based dietary guidelines and apply this to population-level nutrition practice with consideration to the socio-cultural role of food choices and behaviours.
