This unit is divided into two modules; the first explores voice disorders, and the second explores disorders of fluency. In the first module, students will learn about the anatomy, physiology and acoustics of voice. They will integrate their knowledge of motor speech, swallowing and voice disorders, demonstrating an understanding of how these are interrelated in terms of anatomical and physiological function. Students will develop skills in assessing and describing voice across the lifespan and designing evidence based, person-centred interventions. In the second module, students will learn about fluency disorders across the lifespan. They will integrate their knowledge of the anatomy and neurology of the speech system with competing theories on the pathogenesis of fluency disorders. They will develop knowledge, skills and competency in the assessment, analysis, diagnosis and evidence-based management of fluency disorders in children and adults. Students will understand and evaluate the psychosocial impacts of both voice and fluency disorders across the lifespan.
