Unit Description

In this unit, preservice teachers will develop a clear understanding of the concepts, research, issues and theory of language and literacy across the six key components underpinning reading and writing success in early childhood education. The importance of oral language, phonological awareness, phonics, vocabulary fluency and comprehension is a focus of this unit, as preservice teachers engage in research literature to develop knowledge, skills, and action to become effective inclusive educators. Preservice teachers will apply the Early Years Learning Framework and the Australian Curriculum English in reading, writing and oral language, to devise effective practices and planning that capture a learner centred focus.

Unit Learning Outcomes

1.	Implement knowledge and understandings of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture, identity, and language to influence responses that engage all learners.
2.	Apply the Early Years Learning Framework and the Australian Curriculum English Foundation level to critically review and theorise content, teaching, learning and assessment methodologies for diverse learners.
3.	Critically evaluate current research literature, to demonstrate knowledge, skills and awareness that enhances positive attitudes towards reading and writing.
4.	Design, justify and apply theoretical knowledge of language acquisition and the six areas of literacy development for effective professional practice and responses that engage all learners.
5.	Critically analyse and reflect on educational leadership strategies that apply and synthesise appropriate early childhood curriculum approaches and play-based pedagogies.
6.	Critically review approaches and use of digital technologies and multimodal strategies in language and literacy teaching and learning.
