The unit introduces students to the basic principles of conventional and advanced manufacturing techniques. The unit will examine the challenges of the manufacturing processes by the development of new or improved materials and technologies, approaches to productivity, product design and quality, sustainability, energy consumption and process capability requests.
Topics include elementary analysis of conventional and advanced manufacturing processes such as casting, injection molding, material removal and joining processes, forming and shaping processes, and additive manufacturing techniques as well as considerations of manufacturing in today's competitive environment (Automation possibilities, Computer-aided Manufacturing and Computer-integrated Manufacturing Systems).
