This unit introduces students to the scientific study of language. Students will develop an introductory understanding of theoretical foundations and practical techniques used by linguists to analyse basic structural features of languages, including Australian Indigenous languages and languages of the wider Australian region. With an emphasis on problem-solving and data analysis, central concepts covered include sound production and sound systems, parts of speech, the structure of words and sentences, and the creation and analysis of meaning in language.
The Intensive 4 offering for this unit is only available to First Nation students in the Diploma of First Nations Language Work and is not available for online enrolment. To enrol, students will need to first consult with the unit coordinator before completing the Special Enrolment form accessed via the eForms tile through CDU Portal.
