The Graduate Certificate of Rural and Remote Midwifery Practice supports midwives who work, or are preparing to work, in rural maternity services or health clinics in remote or very remote communities in Australia. The course is designed to provide students with the opportunity to understand the context of care in these settings and to adapt their professional knowledge and clinical skills to these new environments where the available resources are reduced and access to immediate emergency care may be limited and where the could be working as a single midwife in the community or on shift. Building relationships with women, families and communities sit at the heart of successful maternity care in rural and remote communities and this course will help students begin the journey of understanding the cultural, legislation and policies that surround maternity care in a rural and remote context.
Compulsory attendance
This course includes a mandatory four-day simulation teaching block in Semester 2, facilitated at the Alice Springs campus. Students are responsible for any associated travel and accommodation costs.
