Research Students will be allocated one of three types of places:
1. Research Training Program (RTP) Place
The Commonwealth Government's Research Training Program (RTP) provides funding to universities to support domestic and international students undertaking higher degrees by research.
All eligible domestic students who are offered admission to an HDR program at CDU are automatically allocated an RTP place, which provides a tuition fee offset (fee exemption) for the duration of their research.
The maximum duration of an RTP place is:
- Four years full-time equivalent for a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)
- Two years full-time equivalent for a Master by Research
Domestic students are not required to pay tuition fees while within the maximum duration of their RTP place. However, if they exceed the allowable period, they may be required to pay fees for any additional time to complete their degree.
2. Fee Waiver Scholarships (International Students)
Charles Darwin University offers a limited number of tuition fee waivers to international applicants who are awarded an RTP stipend scholarship. These fee waivers cover all tuition fees for the standard duration of the candidate's degree, which is normally:
- Three years full-time for a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), with the possibility of a six-month extension in approved circumstances
- Two years full-time for a Master by Research
3. Full Fee-Paying Place
International students who are not awarded an RTP fee offset or fee waiver scholarship may be offered a full fee-paying place and will be responsible for covering the tuition fees associated with their program.
