General Description

Apprenticeships/Traineeships: Currently not available as either an apprenticeship or traineeship.

This qualification reflects the role of workers who assist teachers and support student learning in a range of classroom settings under the guidance of a teacher or other educational professional. At this level, workers may be involved in facilitation of learning for a range of instructional groupings, including for those students in need of additional support. In these roles, the education support worker sources and analyses information from diverse sources, may work with limited direct supervision and could provide guidance to other workers.

Education support workers work mainly with students in classroom settings in primary or secondary schools, as defined by State/Territory legislation.

To achieve this qualification, the individual must have completed a total of at least 100 hours of work in a classroom environment catering to primary or secondary school students, within at least one school in Australia as detailed in the Assessment Requirements of units of competency. The total number of hours may be applied collectively across all units of competency that include the requirement for workplace hours.

CHC40221 Certificate IV in School Based Education Support - 2026

Accreditation
This is a current, nationally accredited skill set from the CHC Community Services Training Package.

Locations and Study Mode
Delivery at all locations is subject to sufficient demand and resources.

Locations: Alice Springs, Casuarina, Katherine, Remote

Study Mode: On campus, online, both

Subject to demand other locations and modes may become available throughout the year.

Entry Requirements Domestic

A Language, Literacy, Numeracy and Digital Literacy (LLND) evaluation helps identify any areas where you may need additional support to help you achieve your goals.

Students are to complete the LLN Robot Quiz and receive a minimum of Level 3 across all five areas, as those who wish to commence this course need to have the required skills and knowledge to undertake the qualification at this level and a general command of spoken and written English to be able to meet industry standards for communication in the education sector.

Note: Some students currently working within the NT Department of Education may have completed a similar LLN Assessment and this may be submitted for consideration by the lecturer.

To gain entry into CHC40221 Certificate IV in School Based Education Support, candidates are required:

To be currently working in a primary or secondary school in Australia as a teacher aide (either full time or permanent part time); and/or
Recently worked full time for at least 6 months in a primary or secondary school in Australia as a teacher aide; and/or
Recently completed CHC30221 Certificate III in School Based Education Support

All students must have access to a primary or secondary education environment, either voluntary or paid. The CDU TAFE placement coordinator will assist in finding a placement school.

A current Ochre Card (Working with Children) for paid employment purposes (this includes voluntary student placement) from SAFENT - while this may not preclude enrolment, it must be obtained before commencement of placement/s.

Required Resources
Students will have 24/7 access to assessments and learning resources on CDU's online learning platform Learnline. Before using Learnline however, students will need to ensure that their computer has the correct setup.

Working with Children Clearance - Standard Fee (Employment) $87.00

This program is delivered over a period of 2 years part-time. The length of time to complete this qualification will depend on the location, study mode and/or units selected and will vary depending upon how long a student takes to reach the required competency level.
