Unit Catalogue

Vulnerable populations often experience health conditions that are exacerbated by inadequate healthcare. This unit introduces students to key concepts in working with vulnerable populations across a variety of healthcare settings. Students will develop knowledge, expertise and skills, with an emphasis on social policy and the legal and ethical requirements for working with 'at-risk' people. Understanding of how health professionals can work with individuals and communities to address the factors leading to vulnerability will be addressed. The unit builds on evidence-based research in health, nursing, midwifery, psychological and sociological sciences to address key issues related to health equity. A focus on populations who experience a disproportionate burden of ill-health and social disparities and is designed to prepare students to assess and develop management strategies to care for vulnerable populations in either low resource or complex environments.
