Unit Description

The unit will introduce students to the concepts of safety and quality in healthcare, governance structures and legislation, risk management and reporting, human factors, ethics and open disclosure. The unit follows recommendations from the WHO on Quality and Safety curricula for health professional education. It will also equip them with skills needed to critically evaluate Quality Improvement (QI) projects and communicate complex patient safety and quality improvement needs to a variety of relevant stakeholder audiences.

Unit Learning Outcomes

1.	Critically appraise contemporary patient safety and quality legislation, frameworks and strategies at a local, national and international level.
2.	Evaluate relevant techniques and tools for analysis, reporting and management of error in contemporary healthcare delivery.
3.	Communicate complex patient safety and quality improvement needs to a variety of relevant stakeholders and audiences.
4.	Critically examine Quality Improvement Projects in the healthcare setting.
5.	Apply quality and safety concepts and principles to globally recognised patient safety priorities in health care.
