Perinatal mental illnesses are among the commonest morbidities of pregnancy and cover a wide range of conditions. Students will examine women's perinatal mental health needs, causes of poor mental health and the adverse impacts of perinatal mental illness on the family's emotional wellbeing, parent-infant relationships and the child development. The unit will explore approaches designed to reduce risk of developing a perinatal mental illness and how to empower women to make informed decisions about treatment. The effectiveness of contemporary perinatal mental health practices and services will be critically reviewed and debated.
