IAS163, TES102
This unit introduces the range of sounds used in the world's languages (phonetics) and how they are used in their respective sound systems (phonology). Students will examine how speech sounds are made by the human vocal tract, how they are transmitted (acoustically) and how they are perceived. Through developing knowledge of and proficiency in the use of the International Phonetic Alphabet (an alphabet linguists use to transcribe a wide range of speech sounds), students will identify, describe, and analyse the sounds and sound systems of different languages of the world, including Australian First Nations languages. Students will also engage with digital applications for the recording, analysing, measuring and editing of speech sounds.
