Unit Description

This unit invites students to a world where art intertwines with the tactile and the ephemeral.

Students will develop skills and knowledge in weaving, papermaking, and soft sculpture processes and techniques, engaging with properties of natural fibres, blending practical skill-building with conceptual thinking within the framework of sustainable practice.

From the garden to the studio, this course weaves a narrative that explores the profound cultural and historical significance of fibre arts, unravelling the threads that connect traditional techniques to contemporary practices. The unit offers students the opportunity to explore individual and communal weaving and fibre arts practices, with particular focus on Indigenous creative and cultural practices in northern Australia.

Unit Learning Outcomes

1.	Identify the tools and techniques of weaving, papermaking, and soft sculpture.
2.	Apply and experiment with the principles, materials and techniques of fibre arts, using safe, sustainable, ethical and inclusive practices.
3.	Recognise the contextual relevance of fibre arts in cultural, historical and contemporary settings.
4.	Implement fibre arts projects to communicate ideas in response to the world.
5.	Examine, discuss and revise creative work in response to feedback and reflection.
