Do you want to develop the skills of a visual storyteller, working with moving images and sound to shape the story for an audience?
Whether you're a creative practitioner looking to work with film and moving image, an emerging film editor or a professional from outside the creative sector seeking guidance on how to edit and manage screen media, then this unit is for you, providing the fundamentals of the role of the editor to bring moving image, sound and text together to tell a story for a given audience. This unit equips you with the skills to edit with proficiency, whether for a big or small screen.
You will be introduced to digital editing software, nonlinear editing systems and workflow optimization. However, the focus of this unit is on the editor as storyteller, rather than technical proficiency in specific editing applications. You will gain confidence in making choices to edit moving images to tell a story and understand the significance of storytelling elements such as time manipulation, pace, character arcs and thematic resonance, as well as the important role that sound plays in conjunction with image - soundscapes, music and the human voice - to tell your story with emotional impact for the audience.
Internal students will access editing software in the computer labs at the Casuarina campus.
External students will need their own computer and editing software. Information about the most affordable options for editing software will be provided to External students prior to the start of the semester.
