Put your musical ideas to paper. Discover valuable composition techniques, create engaging music, and learn how to effectively communicate your ideas to the musicians that will be performing your work.
This unit develops skills and conceptual knowledge in composition and arranging. You will learn a range of composition techniques across a wide range of genres and musical disciplines, from contemporary bands to classical ensembles, and music for film and games. This unit also teaches the use of notation software to create notated scores, chord charts, and lead sheets in order to effectively communicate musical ideas and concepts with ensembles.
You will cover the musical elements of composing, such as harmony, melody, rhythm, texture, structure, and instrumentation. You will utilize these skills in the creation of original musical works within a style and genre of your choosing. You develop your skills through formative assessment items, first submitting a rough draft composition and then using the feedback gathered to further develop your piece. Alongside the completed composition, the final assessment consists of individually notated scores/lead sheets/chord charts for each instrument, allowing your work to be played in professional rehearsal environments.
