Unit Description

This unit focuses on developing critical pedagogical content knowledge, mathematical proficiencies and skills related to the complexities of teaching senior secondary mathematics as defined by the Australian Curriculum. From a pedagogical standpoint, preservice teachers will examine and reflect on key ideas, content, and concepts from the Australian Curriculum - Senior Secondary Mathematics, such as functions, calculus, matrices, networks, probability, and statistics. Through knowledge on how the brain learns preservice teachers will develop contextually engaging and student-centred learning sequences, they will study the relationship between content and pedagogy, questioning, assessment and feedback, and construct student-centred and inquiry-based approaches to the teaching of senior mathematics. Preservice teachers will also explore strategies for expanding their pedagogical content knowledge and engaging students in the learning of mathematics using graphics calculators and relevant technologies.

Unit Learning Outcomes

1.	Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of mathematics teaching models, concepts, content, and assessment structure for senior secondary mathematics.
2.	Analyse learning activities such as concept maps to help students develop a broader understanding of senior secondary mathematics curriculum content and overarching connections.
3.	Drawing on knowledge of how the brain learns design and organise senior mathematics content and concepts into progressive learning sequences learning and teaching sequences that use a variety of teaching strategies literacy and numeracy skills, proficiencies in mathematics, graphics calculators and digital technology resources.
4.	Reflect on key learning issues and apply pedagogical content knowledge to plan and design activities that engage students that includes formative assessment and feedback strategies.
5.	Develop a repertoire of context-specific diagnostic, formative and summative assessment methodologies and resources that fit students' individual learning needs while also fostering senior mathematics engagement.
6.	Demonstrate an understanding of the role of strategic and pedagogical questioning in the development of senior mathematical concepts and connections.
